Eccentric Coffee
Brasil FTO Poco Fundo peaberry (8.08) – this one makes an interesting espresso with more pronounced peanut tones than the non-peaberry poco fundo, but the thing is that it’s only acceptable with the max-extraction of a good machine. It is an ideal blending bean for a good espresso machine. It’s no good with a stovetop moka, and definitely hostile in the usual filter methods. Unexpectedly in its favor: it has added a good dry snap with bass tones to a complex blend (balanced by Bolivian and topped off with Ethiopia Idido Misty Valley) that serves well in a french press!
Sumatra Blue Batak (‘07) – despite much touting of this bean, I found it way too funky. It had to be roasted full city +, well into second crack, to be palatable, and then it really only worked for me as a strong espresso with milk & sugar, i.e., somewhat camouflaged by a method that nevertheless well served its ICBM tones.
Guatemala Oriente dry-process (12.08) – Those dried apricots, that barnacle-encrusted cask of marsala, and whatever else – this is their ideal companion. Have discovered that just into second crack, this is a great addition (20%) to a blend that needs an element of plumminess. Is plumminess really a word?
